Shat means ‘Hundred’ and Shat Chandi Path means to recite the 13 chapters, composed of over 700 verses of Durga Saptshati, together known as Shat Chandi Paath, 100 times. It is done to invoke the blessings of the divine mother Durga, also known as Maa Chandi, who is also the protector of the human kind. The divine mother is the soul, and sole truth of the world, she possesses all the powers in the world.
Shat Chandi Anusthan is a powerful and revered ritual in Hinduism, dedicated to Goddess Chandi, a fierce and protective form of Goddess Durga. Known for her boundless energy and invincible strength, Goddess Chandi represents the ultimate power that annihilates evil and restores balance in the universe.
This anusthan is performed to invoke the goddess’s blessings for protection, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles from one’s life. It is especially significant during times of adversity, providing spiritual strength and guidance to overcome challenges. Shat Chandi Anusthan is a transformative ritual that fosters divine connection and bestows immense grace upon the devotee.
Mythological Background
The origins of Goddess Chandi are deeply rooted in the Devi Mahatmya (also called Durga Saptashati), a sacred scripture from the Markandeya Purana. The text narrates how the goddess was born from the collective energies of the gods to combat powerful demons like Mahishasura, Shumbha, and Nishumbha, who threatened cosmic harmony.
Goddess Chandi emerged as a fierce warrior, wielding celestial weapons gifted by the gods. Her battles with the demons, particularly the defeat of Mahishasura, symbolize the triumph of good over evil. Similarly, her victories over Shumbha and Nishumbha underscore the goddess’s role in protecting righteousness and restoring balance.
These narratives celebrate the power of the divine feminine and inspire devotees to seek strength and courage in the face of challenges, reinforcing the timeless message of faith and devotion.
Procedure of Shat Chandi Anusthan:
In Hinduism, Shat Chandi Yajna is a very powerful, extraordinary and big yagna. This yagna is performed by a very capable and learned Brahmin. 700 shlokas are recited in this Shat Chandi Yajna. This brings special blessings of Maa Durga. In ancient times, this yagna was always performed by sages, saints, gods and demons to gain immense power.
The Shat Chandi Anusthan is a highly ritualistic and spiritually powerful ceremony requiring careful preparation. The process begins with the purification of the space where the ritual will take place, often by sprinkling holy water and invoking positive energies. Devotees gather the necessary materials, including sacred offerings like flowers, fruits, ghee, and samidha (wood for the fire ritual).
In Shat Chandi Yagna, Panchbhoot Sanskar of Havan Kund is performed at a suitable place. For this, the altar is cleaned with one end of Kush. Then the Havan Kund is coated with cow dung. Then after this, three vertical lines are drawn from the middle of the altar from left to north from south. Then throw some soil out of the Havan Kund with the ring finger and sprinkle the altar with pure water with the right hand. In this way, light the fire with Panchbhoot Sanskar of the altar and worship Agnidev. Then after this, start the worship of Maang Durga by worshiping all the Isht Devtas including Lord Ganesha.
The Shat Chandi Anusthan is a transformative ritual that invokes the fierce energy of Goddess Chandi, offering protection, prosperity, and spiritual growth. Performing this sacred ceremony, especially during auspicious periods like Navratri, empowers devotees to overcome challenges and embrace divine blessings. Procedure of Shat Chandi Anusthan

Preparation
The ritual begins with sanctifying the space using Gangajal and invoking sacred energies. The altar (havan kund) is prepared with cow dung, kusha grass, and pure soil. The environment is cleansed through mantra, and all puja materials like ghee, fruits, flowers, samidha, and durva are assembled before sunrise.

Invocation
The puja starts with invoking Lord Ganesha for obstacle removal, followed by kalash sthapana and navagraha puja. Then, Goddess Chandi is invoked through powerful Durga Saptashati mantras. Panchdevata puja and sankalp are taken for the devotee, aligning intent and devotion with the purpose of the Anusthan.

Offerings
During the homa, sacred items like ghee, samidha, havan samagri, herbs, and flowers are offered into the fire. Each offering is made with mantras from the Durga Saptashati, energizing the surroundings. This symbolic act invites the goddess’s energy and burns away negativity, paving the way for divine intervention.

Aarti & Prasad
The Anusthan concludes with a grand Durga Aarti, chanting of Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu, and distribution of prasadam to all. Special offerings like fruits, sweets, coconut, and dry fruits are presented to the goddess. The prasad is then shared with the devotees, marking the acceptance of divine blessings.
