The Kaal Bhairav Madira Seva is an esoteric and powerful ritual offering rooted in ancient Shaiva traditions. In this practice, liquor (madira)—a symbol of ego, pride, and base desires—is offered to Lord Kaal Bhairav, the fierce guardian deity and a formidable aspect of Lord Shiva. Known as the “Kshetrapal” (protector of the region) of Kashi, Lord Bhairav accepts this unconventional offering to bless his devotees with strength, protection, and liberation.

Unlike typical pujas involving flowers, incense, and sweets, this seva represents a deep act of surrender. Devotees renounce lower instincts and offer them at the feet of the Lord, seeking purification and divine guidance. During the ritual, the priest begins with a Sankalp, invoking your name, Gotra, and intention. The offering is made either by pouring liquor into the idol’s designated mouth or placing it beside the deity, accompanied by chanting of Bhairav Mantras and the Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam.

The ritual is particularly significant in temples such as Kaal Bhairav Mandir in Varanasi and Ujjain, where Lord Bhairav is worshipped in his most tantric form. Offering alcohol at these shrines is not about indulgence, but about transcendence — using worldly elements to rise above the world.
